Devoted Prayer
I love, love, love reading through Paul’s letters! They’re filled with encouragement and urge Christians to keep pressing forward. This particular verse starts out a new section in the New Living Translation (NLT) titled, “An Encouragement for Prayer”. Did you get that? He’s getting ready to encourage us – encourage us with some prayer talk. Cuz talking to God is where it’s at, friends!
Let’s find out what Paul has to tell us…
There are 3 things he mentions in this verse: devote yourself, alert mind, and thankful heart. These all refer to how our prayers should be going down.
#1 Devote Yourself
Devotion is all about dedication and zeal! So pray persistently with some eager enthusiasm, friends. God is eagerly waiting to hear from us, so we should eagerly be talking to Him constantly. This is devoted prayer in action!
#2 Alert Mind
Being alert means you are aware, awake, and attentive. So when we pray with an alert mind we pray with purpose and meaning because we know open communication with our Lord and Savior is essential and effective. An alert mind equals quality time with God.
#3 Thankful Heart
A thankful heart is a key theme throughout the Bible. Praying with a thankful heart realigns our thoughts on God’s blessings, God’s love, God’s fellowship. He’s where it’s at, friends! When we flood our hearts with thankfulness God’s joy takes center stage in our lives.
So, what are you waiting for?!
Do what Paul says! “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful HEART.” You won’t regret it! In fact, you’ll love it, because with devoted prayer comes a closer relationship with the ONE WHO LOVES YOU MOST.
