God Makes A Way For Us – Philippians 4:19

God Makes A Way For Us – Philippians 4:19

“Faith isn’t the ability to believe long and far into the misty future.
It’s simply taking God at His word and taking the next step.”

Joni Eareckson Tada

The Bible is full of God’s encouraging promises.

Let’s take a peek at how GOD PROMISES TO MAKE A WAY FOR US!

God's Promises are found in the Bible.

God is a Way-Maker!

In the midst of the impossible our Lord makes it possible.

He is OUR Way-Maker!

“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Jesus Christ.”

Philippians 4:19 (NKJV)

More goodies from Paul! There’s just something about reading through Paul’s letters in the NT that really sets my heart on fire. Paul knew all about God’s mighty power and his letters are a wonderful reminder of just how awesome our Heavenly Father truly is. He believed in God’s promises and sought out to bring encouragement to those around him. He knew his Creator was a promise-keeper, always there taking care of him, and supplying all his needs. What better way to describe how God makes a way than to remind us of His loving, nurturing heart that’s attentive and alert to all our needs.

Claim His promise today!

A PROMISE – God Makes A Way For Us!

It’s time to seek out some solid truth found in the Bible! Are you ready to fill your hearts with one EPIC story filled to the brim with amazing examples about this promise?! I’m talking about examples where “God making a way” is soaked down to the very core of every page in this story. As you read through each part of this WAY-MAKER story find comfort knowing God will always be there for His people, making a way.

A WAY-MAKER STORY!

Moses, The Israelites, & A Parted Sea

Moses, The Israelites & A Parted Sea

Obviously this would be the first story that pops in my head when I think about God making a way in the Bible, because He literally made the way! But before we make it to that AHA moment – you know, the one where God parts the Red Sea – we actually can find that this story is drenched with “way-maker” moments. It’s really incredible! God made the way in every single scene of this story.

PAUSE…let’s step back a moment and set the stage!

Before I get to showing off God’s astonishing “way-maker” skills I want to recap where this Bible story pickups from. I’d like to revisit where all the Israelites in Egypt came from, because this is the whole reason our “way-maker” story takes place.

RECAP – Genesis, the first book of the Bible, ends with Joseph’s death (Genesis 50:22-26). Before Joseph died he brought his family to Egypt (Genesis 45:16-47:12), after reuniting with them during the 7 years of famine (Genesis 45:1-15). Everything was looking great for the Israelites! (Genesis 47:27) Jacob, Joseph’s father, even got 17 more years with his whole family before his death! (Genesis 47:28) So, at the end of Genesis God’s people were welcomed, settled, and began multiplying in Egypt. Joseph lived there until his death, at the age of 110. And Genesis 50:23 gives us a glimpse at just how long he had with his family after Jacob’s death, “He (Joseph) lived to see three generations of descendants of his son Ephraim, and he lived to see the birth of the children of Manasseh’s son Makir, whom he claimed as his own.” (NLT)

Ok, back to the story…

The book of Exodus is where we find the story of Moses, The Israelites, and A Parted Sea.

As we read through Exodus we find that it includes a record of the mighty deliverance of God’s people. Joseph and all his brothers have now passed on and a new pharaoh has entered the scene. This is where we see a shift in the story. The Israelites large numbers make them a target. The Eygytians weren’t really digging how big this group of people had gotten and began to feel threatened by their numbers so they made the Israelites their slaves. (Exodus 1:6-11) God’s people began being brutally oppressed (Exodus 1:11-22) and it was time for God to step in, make a way, and save His people!

One last thing…

Before we jump into the story I wanted to share some insight from the Bible notes for Exodus 1:12, found in my favorite study Bible!

“When we are burdened or mistreated, we may feel defeated. But our burdens can make us stronger and develop qualities in us that will prepare us for the future. We cannot be over-comers without troubles to overcome. Be true to God in the hard times because even the worst situations can make us better people.”

— Life Application Study Bible NLT (1996, 2004), p. 97

This is how we see God making a way in our lives! When we draw closer and closer to God in times of trouble we begin to see clearly just how well He’s been working. His wonder-working ways are all the encouragement we need to keep moving forward in faith.

AND…our scene is set!

“One of the most memorable things my dad has ever told me, and will stick with me forever, is,
It’s already went through God’s hands.’ And, this story is saturated with this powerful truth!”

PART 1

A BABY SAVED

aheartfilled.com

Let’s open our Bibles to Exodus 2!

In the story of Moses’ birth we find some pretty phenomenal “way-maker” moments.

  • FILL YOUR HEART – Read Chapter 2:1-10!

WAY-MAKER STORY, PART 1 – A Baby Saved

These first 10 verses in chapter 2 are filled with mind-blowing, spirit-lifting, God-working miracles! Plain and simple – God chose Moses before he was born and nothing was going to stop His plans!

Check it out –

  1. Pharaoh sent out the order to kill all the baby boys, yet the midwives kept them safe. (Exodus 1:15-16-21) This is a WAY-MAKER MOMENT, friends!!!
  2. Jochebed, Moses’ mom, protected her baby boy. (Exodus 2:1-3) WAY-MAKER MOMENT!!!
  3. Miriam, Moses’ sister, watched over baby Moses as he floated down the Nile River. (Exodus 2:4-8) Another WAY-MAKER MOMENT!!!
  4. Pharaoh’s daughter showed compassion and rescued baby Moses. (Exodus 2:5-10) AND, another amazing WAY-MAKER MOMENT!!!

Moses was called to be God’s spokesman before he was even born. Moses’ birth alone was filled with life-threatening obstacles, yet through God’s intervention every single hurdle was overcome by His powerful wonder-working ways!! And…we find this all packed into the first 10 verses of chapter 2! WOW!! That’s a lot to unpack in just a few verses. God had plans for this baby boy, and nothing was gonna stop these plans. NOTHING!

SIDE NOTE – Just like God had plans for Moses before He was even born, He also has plans for every single one of us. “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'” Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV) And these plans were already in motion before we were even born! “The Lord gave me this message: ‘I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart…'” Jeremiah 1:4-5a (NLT)

Baby Moses’ life was saved over and over again!

With every obstacle God swooped in and made a way!

(1)The midwives’ faith in God was stronger than their fear of Pharaoh. They had the courage to stand for what they knew was right and God blessed them!

(2)Jochebed’s heart for her baby kept Moses safe and hidden for 3 MONTHS!! Then when she could no longer hide him she placed him in a basket and trusted God to carry him safely down the Nile River.

(3)Miriam’s watchful eye and bravery came into play at just the right moment. God made the way and she approached the princess, and because she stepped out in faith her baby brother was reunited with their family and his life was spared!

(4)The Pharaoh’s daughter didn’t have to save baby Moses. She knew he was an Israelite baby and knew what her father was doing with all the baby boys, yet she showed compassion and adopted him as her own.

GOD’S PROMISES NEVER FAIL!

HE PROMISES TO MAKE A WAY AND HE WILL!!!

More goodies from my favorite study Bible, The Life Application Bible! Check out the notes for Exodus 2:9. The notes do a great job summing up this part of the story.

“God doesn’t need much from us to accomplish His plan for our lives. Focusing on our human predicament may paralyze us because the situation may appear humanly impossible. But concentrating on God and His power will help us see the way out. Right now you may feel unable to see through your troubles. Focus instead on God, and trust Him for the way out. That is all He needs to begin His work in you.”

— Life Application Study Bible NLT (1996, 2004), p. 98-99

HAVE FAITH!!!

A Baby Saved – God Made A Way!

Every page in this part of the story had already went through God’s mighty hands before they even took place and not only did Moses survive his birth, but he was raised inside the Egyptian palace! Yet another WAY-MAKER MOMENT!!!

Claim God’s Promise!

Like the midwives, Jochebed, and Miriam, we too can walk by faith! Let’s fill our hearts and find encouragement believing…

God makes a way for us!

PART 2

PLAGUED ENCOUNTER WITH PHAROAH

aheartfilled.com

Let’s open our Bibles to Exodus 5!

During Moses’ plagued encounter with the Pharaoh God continues to fulfill His promises.

  • FILL YOUR HEART – Read Chapter 5:1-12:33!

WAY-MAKER STORY, PART 2 – Plagued Encounter With Pharaoh

Time to fast-forward a little! (If you aren’t familiar with the story make sure to keep reading from where I left off – Exodus 2:11-4:31.) In chapter 5 of Exodus Moses and Aaron begin the infamous plagued encounter with the new pharaoh of Egypt.

Moses and Aaron’s chat frustrates Pharaoh, so he throws more work at the Israelites. The Israelites get grumpier and Moses becomes impatient.

<<Beware! This new pharaoh is definitely a stubborn one, and his story reveals so much about a hardened heart. Another story for another time though.>>

And so it begins…

God promised to make a way, and it’s about to GET REAL! Check out the conversation that starts up between God and Moses after Pharaoh increased the Israelites workload because of the conversation he had with Moses and Aaron – a conversation God sent Moses to have.

Moses questions why on earth God sent him to talk to Pharaoh…

“Why have you brought all this trouble on your own people, Lord? Why did you send me? Ever since I came to Pharaoh as your spokesman, he has been even more brutal to your people. And you have done nothing to rescue them!”

Exodus 5:22-23 (NLT)

Moses is definitely confused on why this has taken a turn for the worst as he was expecting a much different response from Pharaoh, but God’s work isn’t always apparent at first glance and He affirms with Moses that He will fulfill the promise made.

“You can be sure that I have heard the groans of the people of Israel, who are now slaves to the Egyptians. And I am well aware of my covenant with them. Therefore, say to the people of Israel: I am the Lord. I will free you from your oppression and will rescue you from your slavery in Egypt. I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment. I will claim you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God who has freed you from your oppression in Egypt. I will bring you into the land I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I will give it to you as your very own possession. I am the Lord!”

Exodus 6:5-8 (NLT)

<<Trusting God is the key here!>>

God’s WAY-MAKING promise encompasses this entire part of the story. Even though Moses could not see the way being made, it was happening – a behind the scenes kind of WAY-MAKING moment!

Plagued Encounter With Pharaoh – God Made A Way!

God knew Pharaoh’s hardened heart would cause him not to let the Israelites go. Pharaoh’s heart matter unleashed hardship after hardship upon the Egyptians showing just how powerful God is and how important the deliverance of His people were. Our Mighty Way-Maker sent plagues upon Egypt, one after another, until finally Pharaoh agreed to let God’s people go. (Exodus 7:1-12:30)

  • water to blood
  • frogs
  • gnats
  • flies
  • dead livestock
  • festering boils
  • hail
  • locusts
  • darkness
  • death

WOW! Egypt was hit with God’s fury, over and over again! So many plagues and still a hardened heart.

I’d like to take a moment to point out, God’s timing is not our timing! God’s justice may take longer than we would like, but it does eventually come. God will protect His people. He is the Ultimate Judge.

It’s not until the very end of God’s wrath does Pharaoh finally let go. The last of the plagues had begun, Egypt’s firstborn sons were dying, and Pharaoh orders the Israelites to leave!! (Exodus 12:29-33) What a pivotal and WAY-MAKING moment in the story, and at such a high cost!

The plagued encounter came to an end and God’s promise was fulfilled. His people were free to leave.

Claim God’s Promise!

When it seemed like the odds were stacked against the Israelites, God made a way! His promises prevailed! We can claim His promises as our own, because God makes a way for all His children.

God is our way-maker!

PART 3

FLEEING & THE JOURNEY FORWARD

aheartfilled.com

Let’s open our Bibles to Exodus 13!

We’ve made it to the AHA-moment in the story!

The way-maker moment that got me started on this powerful, awestruck promise that only the Creator of the Universe, our Mighty God, makes and keeps!

  • FILL YOUR HEART – Read Chapter 13:17-17:7!

WAY-MAKER STORY, PART 3 – Fleeing & The Journey Forward

So many amazing wonders of God’s mighty way-making skills have shown up so far! And, friends, we are only getting started with this story! I feel like the climax of the story hit when the final plague was poured out upon the Egyptians, when great mourning and weeping is heard all around, and in the midst of this horrible suffering the Israelites were ordered to leave, but then something even more insane happens! I’m talking about the point in the story where the fleeing turns into an action-packed, drama-filled collision with an enormous, stop you dead in your tracks obstacle – The Red Sea!

Before we get to the Red Sea I wanted to draw some attention to Exodus 13:17-22. This portion of the story includes some important information about the journey they are about to embark on (Exodus 13:17-18), wraps up Joseph’s story (Exodus 13:19), and tells us about another unforgettable way-maker moment in the story (Exodus 13:21-22). This portion of the story also gives us more insight into how God’s way-making ways work! The Life Application Study Bible does a great job explaining it…

“God doesn’t always work in the way that seems best to us…If God does not lead you along the shortest path to your goal, don’t complain or resist. Follow Him willingly and trust Him to lead you safely around unseen obstacles. He can see the end of your journey form the beginning, and He knows the safest and best route.”

— Life Application Study Bible NLT (1996, 2004), p. 116

HE WILL MAKE A WAY!

Follow Him!

Trust Him!

Fleeing

In the midst of being led by a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire (Exodus 13:21) – a WAY-MAKER MOMENT – God lets Moses know that Pharaoh’s hardened heart is getting ready to add chase to their flight. (Exodus 14:4)

<<We are almost there!!!>>

The Egyptians begin a pursuit to catch up to the Israelites, with all the forces in Pharaoh’s army, and they catch up to them!! (Exodus 14:5-9) So, of course, the Israelites start freaking out, questioning why on earth God would even bring them out of Egypt just to be captured. AND, check out Moses’ response when all this goes down…

“But Moses told the people, ‘Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.'”

Exodus 14:13-14 (NLT)

Can you imagine this?! They’re trapped between Pharaoh’s army and a roaring sea. Everything is spiraling out of control, chaos is EVERYWHERE, and Moses’ trust in God is SOLID! His response, “Stay calm! God’s gonna make a way!” Then God steals the show! (Exodus 14:15-21)

Through His powerful WAY-MAKING ways the Red Sea parts and the Israelites walk right through the middle of the sea on dry ground!!! (Exodus 14:22) Walls of water stand on end as they walk right through! A mighty miracle displaying God’s GREAT WAY-MAKING POWER!

Fleeing & The Journey Forward – God Made A Way!

God’s WAY-MAKER MOMENTS just kept piling on top of one another! After the Israelites made it safely across the parted sea the Egyptians follow and the walls of water come crashing down on them. (Exodus 14:23-28) All the Egyptians that gave chase to the Israelites died in the sea.

“When the people of Israel saw the mighty power that the Lord had unleashed against the Egyptians, they were filled with awe before Him. They put their faith in the Lord and in His servant Moses.

Exodus 14:31 (NLT)

The Journey Forward

If you continue reading through Exodus you’ll find God continued making a way for His people. Chapter 16 is filled with more WAY-MAKER MOMENTS – manna and quail from Heaven! Chapter 17:1-7 shows us another WAY-MAKER MOMENT – God provided water from a rock! The entire time the Israelites wandered in the wilderness they saw God’s mighty hand at work. God continued making a way for them the entire time, despite their complaining and wayward behaviors.

Claim God’s Promise!

This part of the story was all about the journey. God kept His promise and the Israelites eventually entered the Promised Land. A reminder that our path may be rough, full of obstacles, and have no victory in sight, but…

God Will Make A Way!!
