A Heart Filled Winter Bible Reading Plan

CLICK HERE TO SKIP DOWN TO THE STUDY MATERIAL FOR WEEK 1

The Rest in Hope Winter Bible Reading Plan is a 7-week study that pairs the book of Hebrews with passages taken from the book of John. The last week the books of Matthew and Acts make a special appearance to help wrap the study up.

The book of Hebrews links God’s saving power with His creative power. In other words, the power that brought the universe into being and that keeps it operating is the very power that cleanses our sins. How mistaken we would be to ever think that God couldn’t forgive us. No sin is too big for the Ruler of the universe to handle. He can and will forgive us when we come to Him through His Son…Christ’s sacrifice was final.”

“In this Gospel, John provides clear evidence that Jesus is the Son of God and that by believing in Him we may have eternal life. John also provides unique material about Jesus’ birth. He did not come into being when He was born, because He is eternal.”

REST IN HOPE – WEEK 1

Friends, the Bible was meant to be read as a whole. Each and every book is beneficial to a heart’s journey. While preparing the Rest in Hope Bible Reading Plan I began looking for ways to pair Hebrews with other Scripture references and once I made it to the book of John the reading plan was complete!

To be able to pair the words from Jesus and His disciples with the book of Hebrews makes for one powerful heart warming experience! So, my friends, as you journey through the Rest in Hope study material may you find this warmth!

SIDE NOTE – Last winter I shared the Rest With The Gospels Winter Bible Reading Plan here at A Heart Filled, and I love the fact that more Gospel reading will be going down with this year’s winter Bible reading plan! The Gospels are a great place to begin a dig when a heart is on the hunt for more, more about Jesus because they shed light on the time He walked the Earth side-by-side His disciples. (To fill your heart with even more of the Gospel truth, make sure to visit the growing collection of devotions that revolve around Scripture found in these four books of the Bible: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John!)

Worship Song – The Jesus Way

There’s just something about a song that helps ignite the flame!

Phil Wickham’s song, The Jesus Way, is the perfect way to kick this study material off! The words in this song are exactly what a heart needs to hear to embrace the Rest in Hope found only in Jesus!

Friends, there’s HOPE in the Jesus way! He is THE TREASURE, He is THE ANSWER!!

This song is a beautiful reminder of what it means to let Jesus lead the way. Be still and listen to the lyrics of The Jesus Way and allow God to touch your heart.

Hebrews 1

FILL UP WITH TRUTH FOUND IN HEBREWS 1

  • Jesus is God’s Son, the awaited Messiah! He is the One promised and prophesied about in the Old Testament. His blood cleansed us. Jesus is alive and He rules from His throne that endures forever!

“The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and He sustains everything by the mighty power of His command. When He cleansed us from our sins, He sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in Heaven.”

Hebrews 1:3 (NLT)
  • Hebrews chapter 1 jumps right into the explanation of just how amazing and mighty Jesus is! When we take the time to soak it all in we learn…

“Not only is Jesus the exact representation of God, but He is God Himself – the very God who spoke in Old Testament times. He is eternal; He worked with the Father in creating the world. He is the full revelation of God. You can have no clearer view of God than by looking at Christ. Jesus Christ is the complete expression of God in a human body.

DIG DEEPER

To dig deeper into what you read about in Hebrews 1, fill your heart with…

  • Prophecy about Christ – Psalms 45
  • A Song Filled With Hope – Deuteronomy 32

John 1:1-14

FILL UP WITH TRUTH FOUND IN JOHN 1:1-14

  • Jesus has always existed! Before the “beginning” even begun He was with God AND was God. <<BOOM!!! This is where I’d insert a few “mind-blown” emojis!!>> God’s truth is amazing and powerful stuff, friends!!

“(1)In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2)He existed in the beginning with God. (3)God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him. (4)The Word gave life to everything that was created, and His life brought light to everyone. (5)The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

John 1:1-5 (NLT)
  • The first few verses in the book of John sums up all a heart needs to know about Jesus. It’s a testimony given to us by one of His very own. Friends, John was there when Jesus walked the Earth. SO COOL!! He knew who Jesus was and wanted us to know Him too!

“(10)He came into the very world He created, but the world didn’t recognize Him. (11)He came to His own people, and even they rejected Him. (12)But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the right to become children of God.”

John 1:10-12 (NLT)
  • Jesus is God IN FLESH, full of unfailing love and faithfulness!

So the Word became human and made His home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen His glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.”

John 1:14 (NLT)

KEEP READING JOHN

If you continue reading through the remainder of John chapter 1 you are able to fill up on John the Baptist’s testimony. (Helpful tidbit – This is not the same John that wrote this book of the Bible.)

  • John the Baptist’s Full Story – Luke 1:5-25, 36-45, 57-80, & 3:1-22

John the Baptist was another eyewitness! He was living on, and walking, the Earth at the same time Jesus was, and his life’s purpose was to tell others of who Jesus was – to prepare the way.

  • John the Baptist’s Mission – John 1:6-8

The eyewitness testimony given by John the Baptist tells us who Jesus is!

  • Jesus is the Lamb of God – John 1:29-30

AND…John the Baptist’s testimony gets sweeter and sweeter as you continue making your way through this chapter!!

  • Jesus is the Chosen One of God – John 1:32-34

Friends, John the Baptist knew JESUS was where hope could be found – the hope that gives rest!

Hebrews 2

FILL UP WITH TRUTH FOUND IN HEBREWS 2

  • Jesus is the Truth! He is our Salvation, the Perfect Sacrifice.

“Because God’s children are human beings – made of flesh and blood – the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could He die, and only by dying could He break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could He set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.”

Hebrews 2:14-15 (NLT)
  • Hebrews 2 includes a warning to all hearts. When we take the time to fill up on God’s Word it’s important we let the words sink in deep. It’s just as important to live by the words we fill our hearts with. Commitment to Jesus takes a conscious effort on our part – EVERY DAY!

The author called his readers to pay attention to the truth they had heard so that they wouldn’t drift away into false teachings. Paying careful attention is hard work. It involves focusing our mind, body, and senses. Listening to Christ means not merely hearing but also obeying. We must listen carefully and be ready to carry out His instructions.

Life Application Study Bible, ©2004, p. 2089
  • Jesus understands!

Since He Himself has gone through suffering and testing, He is able to help us when we are being tested.”

Hebrews 2:18 (NLT)

DIG DEEPER

To dig deeper into what you read about in Hebrews 2, fill your heart with…

  • Salvation Brings New Life – Romans 6
  • Faith in Action – James 1
  • The Majesty of Our Lord – Psalms 8

John 3:16-21

FILL UP WITH TRUTH FOUND IN JOHN 3:16-21

  • JESUS SAVES!! JESUS SAVES!!

“(16)For God loved the world so much that He gave His One and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. (17)God sent His Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through Him.”

John 3:16-17 (NLT)
  • Jesus is the LIGHT!!

“(18)There is no judgement against anyone who believes in Him. But anyone who does not believe in Him has already been judged for not believing in God’s One and only Son. (19)And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. (20)All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. (21)But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”

John 3:18-21 (NLT)

KEEP READING JOHN

If you back it up to the beginning of John chapter 3 you’ll find a few more **special gems** spoken by Jesus that are totally worth the read!

  • A Fresh Start, A New Heart, A Rebirth – John 3:3
  • Jesus Explains Being Born of the Spirit – John 3:5-8

AND…if you’re interested in filling up with more goodness from John the Baptist’s testimony make sure to read what he says at the end of chapter 3!

  • John the Baptist Tells Us MORE About Jesus – John 3:27-26

Eternal life is what Jesus offers those that accept His free gift of salvation, and THIS, my friends, is THE SOURCE of our REST IN HOPE!
