A Heart Filled Winter Bible Reading Plan

CLICK HERE TO SKIP DOWN TO THE STUDY MATERIAL FOR WEEK 2

The Rest in Hope Winter Bible Reading Plan is a 7-week study that pairs the book of Hebrews with passages taken from the book of John. The last week the books of Matthew and Acts make a special appearance to help wrap the study up.

The book of Hebrews links God’s saving power with His creative power. In other words, the power that brought the universe into being and that keeps it operating is the very power that cleanses our sins. How mistaken we would be to ever think that God couldn’t forgive us. No sin is too big for the Ruler of the universe to handle. He can and will forgive us when we come to Him through His Son…Christ’s sacrifice was final.”

Life Application Study Bible, ©2004, p. 2087

“In this Gospel, John provides clear evidence that Jesus is the Son of God and that by believing in Him we may have eternal life. John also provides unique material about Jesus’ birth. He did not come into being when He was born, because He is eternal.”

REST IN HOPE – WEEK 2

Rest in Hope Study Material - Week 2

Friends, the Bible was meant to be read as a whole. Each and every book is beneficial to a heart’s journey. While preparing the Rest in Hope Bible Reading Plan I began looking for ways to pair Hebrews with other Scripture references and once I made it to the book of John the reading plan was complete!

To be able to pair the words from Jesus and His disciples with the book of Hebrews makes for one powerful heart warming experience! So, my friends, as you journey through the Rest in Hope study material may you find this warmth!

SIDE NOTE – Last winter I shared the Rest With The Gospels Winter Bible Reading Plan here at A Heart Filled, and I love the fact that more Gospel reading will be going down with this year’s winter Bible reading plan! The Gospels are a great place to begin a dig when a heart is on the hunt for more, more about Jesus because they shed light on the time He walked the Earth side-by-side His disciples. (To fill your heart with even more of the Gospel truth, make sure to visit the growing collection of devotions that revolve around Scripture found in these four books of the Bible: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John!)

Worship Song – Firm Foundation (He Won’t)

There’s just something about a song that serves as a reminder of all Jesus is!

Cody Carnes’s song, Firm Foundation (He Won’t), helps set the stage so well for this week’s Scripture reading! The words in this song are exactly what a heart needs to hear to embrace the Rest in Hope found only in Jesus!

Friends, the lyrics in this song speak truth to what it’s like to live a life built on Jesus!!! HE IS FAITHFUL through generations, with every season!! We ARE safe in the arms of Jesus, and we WILL make it through.

As you listen to this song, I pray you are able to fill your heart with the assurance Jesus brings our way when we put our faith in Him.

Hebrews 3

Rest in Hope Study Material

FILL UP WITH TRUTH FOUND IN HEBREWS 3

  • Jesus is in charge of God’s house, and His house is our place of rest. As Believers, we are part of His house and this amazing truth is where we gain our confidence and HOPE!!

“(4)For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. (6)But Christ is faithful over God’s house as a Son. And we are His house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.”

Hebrews 3:4, 6 (ESV)
  • Jesus is our firm, sure, and lasting foundation. He is our Solid Rock! Friends, Jesus is where we get to build our faith, trust, and hope upon!!

“Because Christ lives in us as Believers, we can remain courageous and hopeful to the end. We are not saved by being steadfast and firm in our faith, but our courage and hope do reveal that our faith is real. Without this enduring faithfulness, we could easily be blown away by the winds of temptation, false teaching, or persecution.”

Life Application Study Bible, ©2004, p. 2087
  • Hebrews 3 reminds us about the secured rest Jesus offers. This rest is based on the state of our heart. Friends, our hearts matter!! All throughout Scripture we read that it’s always been a heart battle, and Hebrews reiterates this over and over by quoting the Old Testament.

“(7)That is why the Holy Spirit says, ‘Today when you hear His voice, (8)don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested Me in the wilderness. (9)There your ancestors tested and tried My patience, even though they saw My miracles for forty years. (10)So I was angry with them, and I said, “Their hearts always turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.” (11)So in my anger I took and oath: “They will never enter my place of rest.”‘”

Hebrews 3:7-11 (NLT)
  • Jesus is faithful and trustworthy and He offers plenty of rest to those that choose to follow Him! There’s two kinds of rest being discussed in this study material – daily rest and eternal rest. Daily rest is gained when we put our hope in Jesus, and we continually draw upon it as we walk side by side our Savior. It’s a divine rest poured upon us that helps to keep us going while we sojourn through this land. Eternal rest is a Believer’s final destination! It’s the place Jesus is preparing for us right now as we speak. It’s a rest we gain by accepting His free gift of salvation. Heaven is real, and one day Believers will walk the golden streets with Him, but while we wait we have an opportunity to rest in hope right now – RIGHT WHERE WE ARE! We get the choice!! Friends, fellowship with Jesus gets sweeter and sweeter as the days go by! When we choose to stay close to our Savior we fill up on rest found in the hope only Jesus provides!!

“(12)Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. (13)You must warn each other every day, while it is still ‘today,’ so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. (14)For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.

  • Jesus is the Author of life!!

“For just as the Father gives life to those He raises from the dead, so the Son gives life to anyone He wants.”

John 5:21 (NLT)
  • Eternal life is given freely to us by Jesus! It begins as soon as we accept Jesus as our Savior!

“I tell you the truth, those who listen to My message and believe in God who sent Me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.”

John 5:24 (NLT)
  • Jesus is the only way!

“You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to Me!

KEEP READING JOHN

If you back up a little bit in chapter 5 you’ll find some testimony given by Jesus about Himself.

  • Jesus Tells Us He IS God – John 5:16-18

And, since we left off in chapter 3 last week, I’d highly recommend reading through chapter 4! Jesus’ conversation with the women at the well is definitely one worth filling your heart with! (The full story is found in John 4:1-42.) The words He speaks in this chapter are words we all need to hear.

  • Jesus IS Living Water – John 4:10-14
  • Jesus IS The Messiah – John 4:26

Jesus’ conversation with the women at the well not only testifies to who He is but it also shows us how He works!

  • Jesus IS our Example – John 4:34
  • Jesus’ Conversation Lead To Revival – John 4:39-42

Friends, Jesus is the Savior of the world and He is the One who changes us!!

Hebrews 4

Rest in Hope Study Material-A Heart Filled Bible Reading Plan

FILL UP WITH TRUTH FOUND IN HEBREWS 4

  • Jesus is the Author of rest who offers us rest.

“God wants us to enter His rest. For the Israelites of Moses’ time, this rest was the earthly rest to be found in the Promised Land. For Christians, it is peace with God now and eternal life on a new earth later. We do not need to wait for the next life to enjoy God’s rest and peace; we may have it daily now! Our daily rest in the Lord will not end with death but will become an eternal rest in the place that Christ is preparing for us.

Life Application Study Bible, ©2004, p. 2092
  • Hebrews 4 starts out with words that remind us that we are promised rest from God and we receive this rest by putting our faith in Jesus!

“(1)God’s promise of entering His rest still stands...(3)For only we who believe can enter His rest.”

Hebrews 4:1a, 3a (NLT)
  • Jesus is the Great High Priest who sees all, knows all, and intercedes for us all. He offers mercy and forgiveness to those who call upon His name.

“(14)So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered Heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. (15)This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for He faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin. (16)So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Hebrews 4:14-16 (NLT)

DIG DEEPER

To dig deeper into what you read about in Hebrews 4, fill your heart with…

  • The Israelites Reject God’s Invitation – Numbers 13 & 14
  • A Call To Listen – Proverbs 2
  • There Is But One Mediator – 1 Timothy 2:5-6
  • Rest To Know The Lord

John 6:35-40

FILL UP WITH TRUTH FOUND IN JOHN 6:35-40

  • JESUS is the Bread of Life!

“Jesus replied, ‘I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to Me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.”

John 6:35 (NLT)
  • Jesus is our Security!

“(39)And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those He has given Me, but that I should raise them up at the last day. (40)For it is My Father’s will that all who see His Son and believe in Him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.

John 6:39-40 (NLT)
  • Jesus is our Assurance!

“Jesus said He would not lose even one person whom the Father had given Him. Thus, anyone who makes a sincere commitment to believe in Jesus Christ as Savior is secure in God’s promise of eternal life. Christ will not let His people be overcome by Satan and lose their salvation. (See John 17:12 & Philippians 1:6)”
