The Importance Of Rest

I love that as I read through the Gospels I’m reminded that Jesus took time to rest – physical, spiritual, and mental rest! Jesus’ ministry on Earth kept Him busy, kept His disciples busy. It was a good busy, a joy-filled busy, an important busy. But, amidst all the amazing work they were doing Jesus knew the importance of, and embraced, solitude.

In Mark 6:31, we find that Jesus is reminding His disciples not to forget to rest. Service to God is super important, giving Him your all is what He asks for, but rest is also something He knows His children need and wants us to make time for it. (Exodus 20:8-11)

Rest is important!

So, as you read Mark 6:31 remember He’s talking to you too!! He’s reminding us all about the importance of rest. Here, let’s give it a try. Insert your name below and read it aloud.

“And [JESUS] said to [insert your name here], ‘Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.'”

Mark 6:31a (NKJV)

Did you hear what He just told you?? THIS is your reminder to give yourself time for rest. I’m talking about it all – physical, spiritual, and mental rest. Make sure you are resting in His presence, alone and silent, embracing His loving arms as often as you need. Allow yourself to sit for a while and listen in on what’s He’s trying to tell you, teach you, remind you.

Rest is essential!

Friends, are you feeling ran down, tired, exhausted? Lean on Jesus, rest in His presence, and be revived!

Our Rest Coach In Action

Wanna dig in deeper?! Check out some of Jesus’ rest examples, found in the Gospels:

  • Matthew 14:22-23
  • Mark 1:35 & 6:45-46
  • Luke 5:16 & 22:39-44
  • John 4:6

Remember, being about God’s work is not supposed to be a constant draining.

Rest is part of God’s plan!

Have you read Genesis lately? Check out what Genesis 2:1-3 has to tell us…

“Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and HE RESTED on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it HE RESTED from all His work which God had created and made.”

Genesis 3:1-3 (NKJV)

God worked extremely hard those first six days of creation, but on the seventh day He rested! Two chapters into the Bible and we’re already learning about rest. That’s significant! And, then we get to the New Testament, some 4,000 years later, Jesus hits the scene and He’s all about showing us what rest looks like. While Jesus was here on Earth, busy preaching, teaching, and healing He made sure to take the time He needed to get away by Himself and rest. He also made sure to take the time and teach His disciples about the importance of rest.

Friends, THIS is the example we need to follow as we serve our Lord and Savior. What better of a coach to teach us the ways of rest than the Author of rest – God Himself!!
